B.A. English Literature and History with Year Abroad Full-time

Year: 4
2026/27 Session

Students must take one 40 credit Dissertation module

Students choose 80-credits of optional modules.

Students must take a minimum of 40-credits in History and a minimum of 40-credits in English Literature.

Students may take a Professional Skills Module in place of 20-credits of English Language optional modules in semester 1.

Students must take at least one option in the discipline in which they are completing independent study. Students must take 40-credits of optional modules in each semester.

All optional lists are indicative; not all modules will run each year depending on staff availability.

Students taking 80cr in English Lang and 40cr in History

Eng Lit: 40cr Eng Lit Dissertation, 1 sem 1 option from either Block A or B and 1 sem 2 option from either Block C or D.

History: Students choose 2 co-requisite Special Subject Modules to the value of 40cr (20 each semester)

Students taking 60cr in Eng Lang and 60 in History:
Eng Lit: 40cr Eng Lit Dissertation 1 one sem1 option from either Block A or B.
History: Students choose two co-requisite Special Subject Modules to the value of 40cr (20cr in each semester) & 1 20cr option in Sem2.
OR
Eng Lit: 40cr Eng Lit Dissertation and one sem2 option from either Block C or D
History: Students choose two co-requisite Special Subject Modules to the value of 40cr (20cr in each semester) & 1 20cr option in Sem1.
OR
Eng Lit: one sem 1 option from Block A, one sem 1 option from Block B and one sem 2 option from either Block C or D
History: Students choose 1 20cr optional module in Sem2 & the 40cr Dissertation
OR
Eng Lit: one sem1 option from either Block A or B, one sem2 option from Block C and one sem2 option from Block D
History: Students choose 1 20cr optional module in Sem1 plus the 40cr Dissertation

Students taking 40c in Eng Lit and 80 in History:
Eng Lit: one sem 1 option from either Block A or B and one sem2 option from either Block C or D
History: Students choose 2 co-requisite Special Subject Modules to the value of 40c (20 in each semester) plus the 40c History Dissertation.
OR
Eng Lit: one sem 1 option from either Block A or B & 1 from either Block C or D
History: Choose 1 20c option in Sem1 and 1 20c option in Sem2 plus the 40c History Dissertation.

Students taking 60-80 credits in History may choose ONE 20-credit option in Semester 1 and/or ONE 20-credit option in Semester 2.

Students may also apply to undertake a Professional Skills module at level H. If successful this will be taken in place of one of their semester 1 taught modules. The placement can be taken either during the summer vacation (part-time or full-time) or during semester 1 (part-time only). The placement must be completed prior to the Christmas vacation. Students who undertook a Professional Skills module at level I will not be able to undertake a Professional Skills module at level H.
